On Monday, Crunchyroll revealed that Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume (Suzume no Tojimari) anime film would have its world premiere at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival, also known as Berlinale, which runs from February 16th to the 26th.
It will be the first full-length anime film to screen in the festival’s Competition section since Spirited Away in 2002.
As of now, the film ranks as the ninth highest-grossing anime film of all time in Japan, and as the twenty-fifth highest-grossing film in Japan overall.
As of the previous week, it had made almost $98.95 million in profit.
According to Shinkai, “Suzume” is fundamentally based on the catastrophic calamity that hit Japan twelve years ago. I can’t wait to find out what works, what doesn’t, and where people of different cultures might find common ground after watching this video. The film’s impending distribution around the world should answer my questions. I also want to express my gratitude to everyone who worked on the film with us for their extraordinary efforts and dedication.
